Seed Treatments for Small Grain Cereals

چکیده

A seed treatment includes any compound or process applied to seed in order to reduce damage by organisms that infest the seed surface, infect tissue inside the seed, live in soil where the seed will be placed, or attack young seedlings. Compounds discussed in this publication include organic chemicals and microbial formulations that are applied to suppress damage by pathogenic fungi, insects, or parasitic nematodes. Other biological and chemical products enhance seedling vigor in the following ways: • Provide plant nutrition (e.g., Seed Life) • Encourage growth of native organisms that kill fungi (e.g., YEA!) • Protect seedlings from herbicides (e.g., activated charcoal) • Supply symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria (e.g., inoculants for legumes) Processes can be chemical and physical. They include treatment of seed with surface sterilizing substances (e.g., hot water or Chlorox) or sanitizing energy in the form of microwaves, magnetic energy, or electron bombardment (e.g., E-Dressing).

Phenotypic and Transcriptional Analysis of Divergently Selected Maize Populations Reveals the Role of Developmental Timing in Seed Size Determination.

Seed size is a component of grain yield and an important trait in crop domestication. To understand the mechanisms governing seed size in maize (Zea mays), we examined transcriptional and developmental changes during seed development in populations divergently selected for large and small seed size from Krug, a yellow dent maize cultivar. After 30 cycles of selection, seeds of the large seed po...

Cereal seed storage proteins: structures, properties and role in grain utilization.

Storage proteins account for about 50% of the total protein in mature cereal grains and have important impacts on their nutritional quality for humans and livestock and on their functional properties in food processing. Current knowledge of the structures and properties of the prolamin and globulin storage proteins of cereals and their mechanisms of synthesis, trafficking and deposition in the ...

Staying Alive or Going to Die During Terminal Senescence—An Enigma Surrounding Yield Stability

Breeding programs with the aim to enhance yield productivity under abiotic stress conditions during the reproductive stage of crops is a top priority in the era of climate change. However, the choice of exploring stay-green or senescence phenotypes, which represent an opposing physiological bearing, are explored in cereal breeding programs for enhanced yield stability to a different extent. Thu...

Preliminary Investigations of the Effectiveness of Trimethacarb as a Bird Repellent in Developing Countries

Preliminary information on the effectiveness of trimethacarb as a bird repellent on broadcast seed and ripening crops was obtained during 1982 and 1983 from studies in Haiti, India, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Mali, and the United States. R50 and LD50 determinations for nine pest bird species to cereal crops in these countries indicated birds were not as sensitive to trimethacarb as to the avi...

Mutations in Barley Row Type Genes Have Pleiotropic Effects on Shoot Branching

Cereal crop yield is determined by different yield components such as seed weight, seed number per spike and the tiller number and spikes. Negative correlations between these traits are often attributed to resource limitation. However, recent evidence suggests that the same genes or regulatory modules can regulate both inflorescence branching and tillering. It is therefore important to explore ...
